What is VoIP?

The short answer: VoIP (Voice over IP) is the technology that gives you the ability to have voice conversations over an IP based network (like the internet).  Think of when you voice chat with your IM clients - it's the same technology.

Let's add a little more geek speak to the explaination: Your voice conversations get converted into data and voice packets, and then get transmitted via SIP or IAX (IAX/IAX2) protocols over the internet and to various end points such as a traditional home telephone, cell phone, etc.

It provides greater flexibility and portability than traditional phone lines - not to mention the cost savings.  Many SoHos (Small and Home Offices) and SMBs (Small to Medium Sized Businesses) are moving towards SIP/IP PBX Solutions.  With VoIP, you can now get a New York phone number for your small business in San Diego.  Your business in Portland can now have a virtual presence in Los Angeles.

VoIP isn't just about making phone calls, it's about making calls smarter.
